• Dermalogica | Charcoal Resue Masque

I attended an event at Dermalogica a few weeks ago where I was introduced to the Charcoal Rescue Masque.  I always get so excited about being introduced to new Dermalogica products.
Charcoal masques are traditionally used to treat oily skin.  Charcoal draws out excess oil and impurities.  This masque does what you expect of a charcoal masque but also delivers so much more.

Applied to cleansed skin that has been patted dry, the masque is applied thickly and left to dry.  As the maque dries it makes your skin quite tight.  The masque refines pores, calms redness and over time helps to improve the skin's texture.  What I love about this masque is that it is multi-purpose product. While it is a masque and does a great job as one, when you remove it, it works as a great exfoliator.  The way this works is once the masque is dry (7 - 10 minutes), you wet your face and work the masque with your fingertips in gentle, circular motions.  The masque contains very fine volcanic ash particles that help to exfoliate your skin.

    The key ingredients are:

    1. Activated Charcoal - draws impurities from your pores and also absorbs impurities.
    2. Sulfur - antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to help treat acne, rosacea, eczema and sebaceous dermatitis.
    3. Volcanic ash with hot spring, marine salt and Bamboo stem extract are physical exfoliants.
    4. Phytic acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid -  chemical exfoliants that accelerate cellular turnover turnover.
    5. Niacinamide - reduces redness and inflammation.
    6. Cilean Wild Mint - clarifies skin and refines pores.
People who battle with acne and breakouts can use this masque, however if the breakouts are raw this masque cannot be used.  The sebum clearing masque is better suited for these types of breakouts as it is cooling and helps sooth the breakouts.

The Charcoal Rescue Masque can be used by people with dry skin, the main thing to take note of is to not leave the masque for too long. I leave this on for about 7 minutes before wetting my face to work the masque off.  I use the mask 2 times a week and also use a hydrating masque afterwards just to make sure my skin is well moisturised.
The masque is available from Dermalogica concept stores and stockists of the brand.  The recommended selling price is R790.  Now the ultimate question, do I think the masque is worth the price? Definitely! Dermalogica masques are fantastic quality and are target driven - this means that each product is formulated to address specific skin concerns. I have a number of Dermalogica products that I keep in my skincare stash all the time.
