• A little heart to heart

So today is not really a traditional Feel Good Friday post.  I have been debating about sharing something on my blog for a few days now.  I wrote a post a few weeks ago (which I won't mention simply because I don't want to cause more issues) which received a lot of heat.  It really upset me because I am in no way the type of blogger who bad mouths brands in my posts.  It drove me to the point where I was wondering why I even bother blogging. I sat down this week thinking about what reviews I needed to write for the week and honestly, I had no will in me to write.  I was quite shocked at how badly I was impacted by a really insignificant thing in my life.

My blog, although a part of who I am, it is not all of who I am.  My blog is and always has been a hobby.  It is my place to share things I love, to wish out loud and share things with my readers.  I know I have a responsibility to my readers to share content they actually want to read, but because this is not my job, I have a level of freedom that should not be taken away from me by anyone.  I am going to try hard to learn all I can from this experience and grow to be a better blogger from it.  I don't want one little instance to destroy my love for this little blog of mine.  It is my space where I come to to relax and escape from my day job pressures.
Thank you all so much for your continued support of my blog and for coming back each day to read my posts.  If you ever feel that I am not fair towards a brand or product, please by all means share those thoughts in the comments section of the particular post or email me.  I am all for receiving feedback from my readers because you are what matters to me - not any company or brand.

    Have a great day everyone!

    Big Hugs,
    Charlene XXX

    2. Thank you for opening up to us. You are not a robot and just because you are sent things to review, does not mean you are obliged to do anything. It is for this reason as well as the increasing nastiness in the blogging community (that I have witnessed) that I stopped. Stay strong. We love you for the genuine person and blogger you are xxx

      1. Exactly! I have been sent things in the past that I did not even review because I didn't like it. I am actually so happy that I don't blog for a living and I am not a all concerned about Gee Whiskers becoming a big blog - I would really struggle a lot and would probably give up bloggig entirely. Thans for always being such a supportive friend! BIG HUGS! XXX

      1. Really appreciate the support Lauren. This blog is so personal that if I started to lose sight of that I am sure I will give up blogging. It is so comforting to receive this response after everything had been eating away at me. XXX

    4. People will always say bad things. As long as you stay honest and believe in what you post then to hell with them :) I can understand how a blog can bring joy to your life so don't let other people's ignorance take that joy away :)

    5. Charlene, you are a fantastic blogger and I know many people LOVE your blog, myself included. Don't let anyone take away your love for the blog. You did absolutely nothing wrong and have only ever handled yourself with honesty and dignity. I feel that was a form of bullying and that we, as bloggers, should stand up towards that sort of thing.

      1. Kerry! You have no idea how all your messages and support means to me. I am so blessed to have the support of bloggers like you. I have learned a lot from you over the years of following your blog so thank you to you as well for being such a wonderful role model to other bloggers.

    6. Charlene, please do not stop blogging, because of something like this. You need to be honest and true to yourself and your views, you are not obliged to like anything or to promote anything, whether you bought it or were sent it. Brands should not expect you to love something, just because you got it for free. Dont stop, and continue to be true to yourself, and your readers

      1. I will always try to remain true to my readers and blog - that is the point of blogging. To share your experiences with others and I actually love it when readers comment on post sharing their experience should it differ from mine. It is always great tohave other's opinions on things. I just don't want brands / companies to take that opinion and shape it into what they want it to be.

    7. YOUR space therefore YOUR voice! Wish brands would get off their high horses are realise that! From your particular experience I refuse to even look at their products because how they were was totally uncalled for! I love that your reviews are 100% your honest thoughts and not your thoughts that are being swayed because the brand gave you a free gift (seeing waaaaay to many blogs like this at the moment). I love your blog and your posts so will continue to read them!

      1. It is actually quite surprising to me that people seem to know exactly what I am referring to in the post above. I didn't want to name a brand and it is also why I didn't take to social media about it, in my opinion it was better to keep it to myself as far as possible - but I know that I was publically bad mouthed at an event so that is possibly how this has all spread. It is such an unfortunate and sad incident that could have altogether been avoided if I had just been contacted directly and I would have happily explained myself without causing any fuss. I understand the excitement and joy of getting "free stuff", and it is hard to not be driven by that. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the product I received, I did an honest review of it on my blog but it is like me getting one BB Cream and then never doing a post on another BB Cream because the first one I got was given to me for free. Products don't buy reviews or loyalty on this blog - if I like it and it is good I will review it here. Thanks for your support Kate - and sorry for the LONG reply XXX

    8. You are completely free to write whatever you want to...and not to write about things you don't want to write about too. Blogs are not brands' free (or very cheap) marketing tools - they are a person's personal thoughts. If you mention a brand it is because you have something to say about it, not because you owe it to them. I know how you feel, sometimes I feel like a dancing monkey there for other people's benefit. And sometimes I don't feel like writing anything at all. So when I feel like that I stick up my "taking a break" note on my blog and just ignore it for a week or two. It's sad that I have to do that, but as you say life is so much more than just your blog, so I get on with the rest of it and forget my blog for a bit. Helps refresh your mind. I love your blog, thousands of other people love your blog. Just remember that and keep on being you and doing what you do xxx

      1. It is really hard not to be swept up by things and it does feel as if we are expected to be puppets at times. If I think of how much time and money I have spent on putting this blog together, it is scary to think that any company thinks they can buy time on here for next to nothing - and then complain about coverage, etc. We try to be "brand friendly" as far as possible as bloggers, but there is a line that has to be drawn. If you can't prepared to draw that line in the sand, then it's your right to do so. I have never liked bullies and I will never tolerate being bullied - especially when I know that what I have done doesn't warrant such treatment. It is so great that we have a supportive blogging community despite how horrible some aspects of blogging can be. Big Hugs and love to you Bronwyn XXX

    9. Do not let anybody ever make you feel this way again! You are amazing, and so is your blog! Nobody has the right to treat you this way... plus there was no reason for it in the first place. You can share whatever you want on YOUR space. Just keep on doing what you are doing. You are loved and respected in the blogging world and are an inspiration to so many xxx

    10. I am very saddened by all this Charlene. I do feel that it was a form of brand bullying and should not be tolerated, there is no place for this among us. You have done nothing wrong, we all mention multiple brands in a post at times, it makes it easier to explain to readers by means of comparison.
We also are under zero obligation as bloggers since we are not employed by any brands nor paid for posts.
Please do not let this affect you in any way or cause you to doubt yourself, you are such a wonderful person who is always honest and kind.
I must admit the incident has left a bitter taste in my mouth and is making me reluctant to ever deal with or post about the brand in future, even though I may have enjoyed an item.
Please know that you have all my love and support in principle and thought.

      1. Thank you so very much for your wonderfully supportive comment. It is something I couldn't understand we all compare brands and products to other similar ones. It is sad that I came under fire but honestly after all these wonderful comments it has made me so much stronger! Big hugs!

    11. Hi Charlene. I don't usually comment but felt that I had to after reading your post. I read your blog because I want your honest opinion. I'm not interesting in reading a brands PR mouthpiece. In fact sometimes, when I'm reading a blog I can pick up that a person is just posting what the brand wants it to say and it is really offputting. Keep on posting what you believe. Not every thing is liked by everyone.

    12. Hi Charlene. I am so sorry that this has happened to you. I am glad that you are taking a stand and being true to yourself. In the end that is what matters most. If this is how a brand treats you then they are not worth your time. Blogging with integrity and honesty makes a blog great. xxxx

    13. Your blog is your blog :) Brands can not tell you what to write - some bloggers do that 'cause brands pay them lots of moola. But like you said you have a responsibility to your readers where you give your honest opinion on products. ALways remain true to yourself :)
