• Valentine's Series: Mother City Mom

Today I am featuring a great post from Bronwyn (Mother City Mom).  She will be sharing a step by step Valentine's Day makeup look.
Step by Step Valentines Day Tutorial
I did a Valentines Day post with a few makeup tips on my blog last week (read the post here), so I thought as a follow up I would do a step by step makeup look along the lines of what I was implying before, i.e. something fresh and natural rather than a glam red carpet face. After all, if your night is about romance then your partner probably wants to look at you across the table, not a drag queen. But of course that's just my opinion...different strokes and all that! This look is nice for a low-key dinner or something like a picnic or champagne cruise. You can see that I've chosen some affordable options at the top and their luxury versions below, so you can get the look on any budget. All of these products are either favourites of mine or I've heard rave reviews.

    Step One - Primer
This is quite an important step if you want your makeup to last. There are primers for different things, and if you're oily then you might prefer to go for one that is mattifying/pore minimizing. I chose radiance enhancing primers to give you a glow. I've tried the L'Oreal Lumi Magique Pure Light primer and while it looks scary and very white it blends out into a pretty, soft-focus sheen. The Dior primer is part of their new Spring range which should be out mid-Feb. I've heard it is ridiculously glowy. In both cases you can opt to use just in the areas you want to highlight.

    Step Two - Foundation
I'm really a fan of 'my skin but better' foundations which looks light and natural. This is personal opinion, so if you feel you need more coverage a nice option is something like Estée Lauder Double Wear Light or Stila Stay All Day foundation & concealer. I personally love Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, and I've heard the Bourjois Happy Light is brilliant as well as affordable. Blend really well with a buffing/stipple brush to get a flawless finish. You can always add more, so it's best to build up sheer layers. Don't forget concealer!

    Step Three - Cream Blush
This will depend on your skin type, but if you are dry or combination cream blush should work well for you and I think it can look more natural and dewy than powder sometimes - hence why I picked it for my V-Day look. My favourite is the Blush Creme de Chanel in revelation or the Stila Convertible Color in peony, both pretty natural-looking pinks. The Stila blush is definitely more creamy and dewy. A few taps of blush is all you need, and then blend out well with your ring finger. Less is more.

Steps Four and Five - Eyes and Lips
You can choose a soft brown smoky eye or just a single shade on your lids, depending on how adventurous you are. I usually go for light brown/taupe with a bit of shimmer and use a dark brown shadow as eyeliner because it looks softer than a pencil. Remember to add a bit of a highlight colour to the inner corners and below the arch of your brow. More important is mascara, because you want to frame your eyes for a date (actually when don't you want to frame your eyes? Bed time is the only time I am without mascara!). A waterproof formula or one that you trust not to smudge goes without saying. My favourite mascara to date is the Diorshow Iconic Overcurl and Volume de Chanel. I've heard Max Factor False Lash is really good, so worth trying out!
And since I have already blathered on long enough (about stuff which is pretty obvious, isn't it!?), I like to keep lips more on the pink/nude side. I chose products which stain so that you don't have to constantly reapply your lipstick - so much easier! I love both the YSL glossy stains and L'Oreal Caresse Shine stains and they are incredibly similar despite the price difference. Apply two or three layers, allowing a bit of drying time in between, and they will last forever. Well, a good few hours anyway. Now, go forth and conquer hearts.
Thank you so very much Bronwyn for sharing this great tutorial with all of us.  I personally love the romantic makeup look.

    Big Hugs,

    Charlene XXX

    3. Obsessed with the Lumi Magique primer and that YSL Glossy Stain... *swoon*

I totally agree, rather go for the minimalistic look (especially if it's a first date). The 'Natural' look photo is my fave... x
